Northern Sound TY Programme, November 13th - 17th 2023 – Kayla Reilly

Northern Sound radio hosted a 5-day introduction course to Radio broadcasting for T.Y students. Kayla Reilly participated in the programme, which focused on Audio recording and editing, Interview techniques, on air presentation techniques and social media presence. The programme also included a visit to the Northern Sound studios in Monaghan to see the operations of a live studio and the working environment. A broadcast of the audio created and edited from the course was aired in a special TY show as part of the Northern Sound on air programming.

UNICEF Online TY Programme, January 15th –19th Jan 2024 - Katelyn Doran, Ella McCarville & Mollie Woodgate

UNICEF offered students training in advocacy and activism. The focus of the programme was on child rights advocacy related to the issues UNICEF tackles around the world, including wealth inequality, discrimination, gender rights and climate justice. On the final day of the programme Largy College students designed their own advocacy strategy and discussed ways that they can take action on these topics in their local communities. This TY Work experience programme experience provided students with a real experience of human rights advocacy and gave an understanding of the global issues that they can take action on.

Law Society of Ireland’s ‘Solicitors of the Future TY Programme, February 19th – 22nd 2024 - Sadhbh Bonner

Solicitors of the Future is an innovative Transition Year (TY) programme offered by the Law Society of Ireland, which provided Sadhbh with an introduction to the solicitor’s profession. Solicitors of the Future encourages TY students to consider a career in law and offers an insight into the role of a solicitor in practice. In addition, this TY programme shows how the law can be relevant to the daily lives of participants and promotes awareness of the legal processes, constitutional principles, and values which underpin the rule of law in Ireland.

The Trinity TY Visions for Education Programme, February 19th – 23th 2024 – Lily May Watkin

Trinity College Dublin hosted the Trinity TY Visions for Education Programme, where Lily May had the opportunity to explore learning spaces of the future and how to make education better for everyone. The programme encouraged fun, inclusion and collaboration. The programme involved sessions around design thinking, diversity and equity, leadership, student voice and empowerment and innovation for learning. Lily May also participated in a team-based project focused on learning experiences for the future

Look into Law TY Programme, February 26th – 29th 2024- Ella McCarville

The Bar of Ireland’s Transition Year programme ‘Look into Law’ is a blended programme offering both online learning and onsite visits. Over the week, Ella heard from The Chief Justice, Chair of the Bar Council, members of the judiciary, and numerous junior and senior barristers – who shared the journey of their careers as well as exploring civil and criminal law practice. Specialist practice areas such as immigration law, employment law and sports law was also be highlighted. As part of the programme, Ella took part in a Mock Trial to broaden her understanding of the various roles of participants in a trial, as well as taking part in a tour of the historical King’s Inns, the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts of Justice.

The Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) Transition Year MiniMed Programme – Ciara Gavin, Rocha Clancy, Lily May Watkin, Sidra Ati , Ella McCarville, Hannah McCabe & Katie Maguire

Royal College of Surgeons Ireland Transition Year Programmes provided an excellent opportunity for Largy College students to gain experience of what it is like to train and work as a doctor, pharmacist and physiotherapist. The programmes consist of lectures and real-life surgeries shown via video link to the operating theatre, all of which are carried out by leading professionals in their respective areas. All sections of the programme are carried out by leading professionals in their respective areas with a wide variety of topics – including general practice, heart surgery, pathology, paediatrics, forensic medicine, transplants, obstetrics and gynaecology, pharmacy and physiotherapy being covered during the programme.

Combilift TY Programme -STEPS Engineering Your Future, April 29th – May 3rd – Megan Fay & Tiarnan O'Neill Joe Clarke, Shane McCaughey & Tomas McGuigan

Combilift hosted a programme for Transition Year Students to experience the “Life of an Engineer” in a fast-paced working environment. This event gave our students an insight into work as future Engineers/Technicians. Students developed an understanding of various Manufacturing and Engineering Processes and learned about the wide range of opportunities Combilift has to offer.  During the event, students received a tour of Combilift’s state of the art Manufacturing site, participated in hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and concluded their visit with a Combilift Quiz.  Students also got the opportunity to listen to “A Day in the Life” of some of our current Apprentices, Trainees and Engineers. These talks entailed why they chose a career in Engineering and what they enjoy most about working in Combilift.
