Junior Cycle Business Studies

The Junior Cycle Business Studies curriculum aims to enhance students’ understanding of the business environment and develop essential skills for life, work, and further study. This is achieved through three interconnected strands:

Personal Finance: Students learn to make informed decisions to manage their financial resources effectively and responsibly.
Enterprise: This strand encourages students to identify opportunities and turn them into practical activities, fostering an understanding of financial, marketing, and operational functions within an organization.
Our Economy: Students gain insights into the dynamic relationship between local, national, and international economies, helping them understand basic economic concepts and their relevance to personal finance and enterprise12.

Senior Cycle Business Studies

A new Leaving Certificate Business specification will be introduced for fifth-year students in September 2025, replacing the current syllabus. This updated curriculum aims to:

Develop students’ awareness of the significance of business in both the Irish and international economies.
Foster an understanding of how the business world operates, emphasizing its relevance to students’ lives.
Enhance financial and business literacy, helping students appreciate the role of business in society.
Highlight how business is shaped by those who work, lead, and manage within the business environment.

The study of Leaving Certificate Business supports students in becoming informed decision-makers and developing a wide range of key competencies.
