Largy College u20 Girls Football were crowned Ulster Champions after beating St Pat’s Keady on Monday 14th January. Largy dominated for most of the game after a slow start. Niamh Tierney was excellent in goals stopping two clear goal chances. She also perfected her kick outs and pin pointed them straight to Largy Players.
Hannah Mealiff, Jenny Freeman and Niamh Gallagher wiped out any ball that came near the full back line. Not only did they turn the ball over but their passing out of defence was excellent. Megan Agnew and Katie Monaghan showed a ferocious workrate throughout the game. They never stopped tackling and defending making it very hard for Keady to break through. Lauren Brady was a rock at centre half back. She intercepted ball, turned over ball and bursted out of defence on numerous occasions.
In midfield Katelyn Greenan worked tirelessly , looking for every kick out and linking the play from defence to attack. Maeve set the pace of the game early on with a sublime goal. She caught a kick out clean, burst through the Keady defence. No one could stop her, she went straight through and fired the ball into the top corner of the net. This drive and determination was seen throughout the match, setting a high standard for all our players.
Our half forward line dominated from the beginning of the game. Fearne Monaghan used her pace to destroy the Keady half back line. The only way they could stop her was by fouling her to the ground. Macayla Greenan was on free taking duty and kicked points that Conor Mc Manus would be proud of. Janelle Mc Govern worked tiressly up and down the field. She also popped over a few lovely points. This half forward line kicked in great ball to the full forward line making their job very easy. Emma Corley got on the end of these passes and scored 1-1 in the first half. Aine Deery also caused trouble with her sweet left foot. In the other corner we had Shannon Murphy who caused havoc. She was the star of the show. Her dummy solo caught out the Keady defence, not once , not twice but too many times. She skimmed by her player each time, even when they put an extra defender on her she still managed to dink past them. She scored 4-3 and deservedly picked up player of the match. Lily , Sarah, Molly, Hannah and Bronagh all came on and contributed to the game. Unfortunately, we could only play 20 players on the day. But Alicia, Chloe, Abigail, Aine and Casey have all got game time throughout the championship and have played an important role in getting this team to the final.
Well done to all players and management on a fantastic achievement winning this Ulster Title.
