Transition Year Biology students took part in a competition run by SEA-SEIS. Scientists from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) deployed 18 seismometers at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean between 17th September and 7th October, 2018, and will retrieve them 18 months later. These devices will be gathering information during this time on the structure of the Earth and the expedition can be followed on line. Some of our students were among entries from all over Ireland and Europe and got to officially name 2 of these devices. Largy College was the only school with 2 winning entries. Congratulations to Aisling Cunningham and Monika Gudenaite who named theirs ‘Nemo’ after Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo and the character in Finding Nemo and also Eimear Courtney who called hers ‘Tom’ after Thomas Crean, an Irish seaman and explorer. The TY Biology class had a video link from the classroom to the ship during the expedition. It is a great achievement and we can safely say that this is the first time that Largy College has been associated with the Atlantic Ocean!
